Custom Felt Gaskets

Prepare a custom felt gasket brief with dimensions, mating surfaces, material requirements, working conditions, and sample approval criteria.

Feltova reviews custom felt gaskets for defined industrial assemblies and product applications. Share a drawing, sample, or dimensional brief so the material, shape, and fabrication route can be assessed before sampling.

What is a felt gasket?

A felt gasket is a shaped felt component fitted between mating surfaces for a specified interface task. Depending on the assembly, the required function may include cushioning, separation, or surface protection. Fiber composition, thickness, compression, and the operating environment must be specified; the name alone does not establish fluid-tight or pressure-rated sealing performance.

What do I need to specify a felt gasket?

Specify the part’s function, mating surfaces, dimensioned outline, thickness, working conditions, installation method, quantity, and approval criteria. Use the eight-detail felt gasket checklist or the custom felt part RFQ template to prepare your brief.

  • Geometry: complete outline, inside and outside dimensions, hole diameters and positions, thickness, tolerances, edge requirements, and assembly clearances around fasteners or other components.
  • Material: fiber or grade preference, density, color, surface finish, and backing. See felt materials and formats if the material has not been selected.
  • Application: mating surfaces, compression, friction, movement, moisture, temperature, medium, and installation method. Assembly photos help explain the location; critical dimensions still need to be confirmed.
  • Purchase details: quantity, packaging, target timing, destination, and whether a drawing, physical sample, or prototype is available or needed.

Which gasket function needs to be checked?

Flat cut shapes, rings, and washers may serve cushioning, protection, separation, or another defined interface task. Adhesive-backed formats require review of the mounting surface and use conditions.

If the assembly requires a fluid-tight or pressure-rated seal, state the medium, pressure, test method, and acceptance criteria. Felt suitability must be evaluated against the actual assembly; the material name alone is not evidence of sealing performance.

How should felt gasket compression be specified?

Provide the free-part thickness and tolerance separately from the installed gap or compressed thickness. Describe how the assembly is held closed and identify the dimensions that govern the gap. If a compression percentage is required, define the reference thickness, calculation and measurement conditions in the specification.

For compression or recovery approval, state the agreed test method, load or displacement, holding time, and any unloading or repeated-cycle checks. Record the required result and the observed sample result separately in the sample approval record. Use the thickness and compression checklist to prepare the inquiry; the working gap alone does not establish an approved material grade.

Is a felt gasket the same as a felt seal?

Names can vary between drawings and suppliers. Describe the required function and assembly so the review addresses the application. See felt gasket vs felt seal.

How should I specify wool felt gaskets?

For a wool felt gasket inquiry, identify the required fiber composition or approved material grade, thickness and tolerance, density specification, and any backing or finish. State the units and measurement conditions for material values using the material specification checklist. If the grade is unknown, mark it as an open point and include the available sample or material reference.

State whether alternative materials may be quoted. Keep each alternative identified separately so the quotation and approval sample can be checked against the intended material, drawing revision, and assembly requirements.

Material review, sampling, and quotation

The part geometry and working conditions guide the material and cutting review. Confirm the grade, thickness tolerance, fabrication route, prototype scope, inspection points, and sample approval criteria before production. A sample review helps resolve fit questions and missing dimensions; the quotation confirms the agreed scope and price.
