To specify a custom felt gasket, share its function, mating surfaces, dimensioned outline, thickness, working environment, installation method, quantity, and inspection requirements. A drawing describes the shape; assembly details explain what the part must do.
1. Describe the application
Explain where the part sits and whether its intended role is cushioning, protection, separation, dust control, or another defined function. Include an assembly photo or sketch. If the requirement involves pressure or fluid containment, identify the required performance and validation method for suitability review.
2. Identify the mating surfaces
Describe the surfaces the gasket contacts, how they are held together, and whether either surface moves. Note grooves, fasteners, or locating features that affect placement.
3. Provide the complete geometry
Mark units, outside and inside dimensions, holes, slots, and cutouts. Identify the drawing revision and the dimensions critical to fit. A photo without a scale is a useful reference, but it does not establish production dimensions.
4. Specify thickness and compression conditions
State the requested thickness and whether it describes the free part or the installed assembly. If compression or recovery matters, include your acceptance criterion or test requirement rather than relying on nominal thickness alone.
5. Describe the working environment
Include relevant moisture, temperature, oil, cleaning agent, dust, and movement conditions. If a material grade is already approved, identify it and provide the specification available for review.
6. Explain installation
State whether the part is retained mechanically or needs adhesive backing. For adhesive review, identify the substrate, surface finish, installation conditions, and any removal requirement.
7. Share quantity and project stage
Separate prototype needs from expected production quantity. Explain whether the inquiry is for a replacement part, a new design, or an approved production drawing. Include destination and requested timing so feasibility can be discussed.
8. Define approval and inspection
List fit checks, dimensions, appearance criteria, labeling, and packing requirements. Label a reference sample as approved, worn, or conceptual; a used part may not represent the original dimensions.
What if the material is not selected?
Describe the application and mark material selection as an open question. Review felt materials and formats, then submit the known requirements without guessing missing specifications.
Turn the specification into an RFQ
Use the custom felt part RFQ template to combine these eight details into one brief. If the part name is undecided, review felt gasket vs felt seal alongside the assembly requirements.
